The Government has introduced the UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), a new travel requirement from certain countries. Similar to the ETSA in the USA or the ETA for Canada this scheme enhances border security and streamlines entry processes.
What is an Electric Travel Authorisation (ETA)?
An Electric Travel Authorisation (ETA) is an official travel permission linked to a traveller’s passport, required for those who do not need a visa or hold UK immigration status. The UK Government uses ETA to perform advanced security checks before travellers begin their journey, helping to enhance border security and prevent misuse of the immigration system.
An ETA enables travellers to make multiple visits to the UK, with each stay lasting up to six months. This authorisation remains valid for a period of two years or until the passport linked to the ETA expires, whichever occurs first. The application process is designed to be straightforward and user-friendly. Travellers can apply online via the Official UK Government website or through the UK ETA app.
The cost of applying is £10, and applications are generally processed within approximately three days. This makes the process accessible and efficient, ensuring travellers can plan their trips with minimal hassle.
It’s important to note that an ETA grants permission to travel but does not guarantee entry into the UK. There is no appeal process for a refused ETA. However, individuals can apply for a visit visa if they wish to travel despite an ETA refusal, allowing a more detailed review of their circumstances.
Who needs a UK ETA?
Exemptions: Travellers with British or Irish passports, diplomats, or those already granted permission to enter or remain in the UK are exempt.
EU Nationals: Applications open on 5th March for travel starting 2nd April 2025.
Non-EU Nationals: Visitors from visa-free countries require either a UK ETA or visa based on the purpose and duration of their visit. Non-EU Nationals can apply now for travel starting 8th January 2025.
